NAME: Noctis Lucis Caelum
CANON: Final Fantasy XV
AGE: 20
CANON POINT: Just prior to leaving for Altissia, after acquiring Ramuh

HISTORY: Wiki — canon point is mid-chapter 8 so no reading past that is required!
PERSONALITY: Noctis is a fantasy royal as written for a modern setting and it shows. In place of grace he has all the awkward vanity of a boy his age; rather than being introduced as ready to take the throne he’s reluctant and less than enthusiastic about his destiny. Born into the Lucian line of kings, his life was mapped out from a young age: go to the best schools, be attended to at all times by his adviser Ignis and his personal guard Gladiolus, and in time, following his father’s passing, take on the mantel of protecting the kingdom. This is a task encompassing not only the symbolic weight of rule, but also a very literal one; a large barrier around the city of Insomnia places a great physical strain upon its king. Despite knowing this, Noctis spends most of his free time avoiding the reality of his situation when possible. His main hobbies are fishing and video games, and prior to leaving Insomnia he’s shown to be particularly fond of spending time with his best friend Prompto at the arcade.

Though he — reluctantly — allows the importance of his position to be impressed upon him following his father’s death and the occupation of his city by enemy forces, Noctis still retains a number of his more human traits. For example, he has a penchant for resting whenever he can and takes frequent deep naps, even sleeping through the team’s car running off the road. Seriously. When he’s not sleeping he’s often wishing he was, regularly complaining about the terrain and his associated fatigue whenever the team is out traveling for too long. This ties into his generally spoiled nature as a whole, indicative of his sheltered and pampered upbringing — he expects his meals to be made for him, is almost always ready with a smartass comment (or what he thinks is smart), and wears designer clothing in totally inappropriate situations while also refusing to eat any food that he even remotely doesn’t like (such as anything containing vegetables).

Another lingering remnant of his childhood is the result of his relative seclusion from most people; Noctis is shy and struggles to show his relaxed side around people he’s not very close to. Around those individuals he tends to put on a front, either acting more responsible as suits his station with people that know he’s royalty (such as young Talcott, particularly when he’s consoling him over his grandfather’s death) or standoffishly and affectedly “cool” (such as with his fishing buddy Navyth).

All that said, Noctis is very pure-hearted and has good intentions, always wanting to help people that need his assistance and accepting great sacrifices along a path he doesn’t desire in order to save his homeland. What he lacks in intelligence (definitely not one of his strengths by any stretch of the imagination) he makes up for in genuine selfless kindness. This trait is seen in him even at a young age: when Iris, Gladiolus's younger sister, is set to be punished for leaving the Citadel without permission, Noctis takes the full blame to spare her despite not actually being at fault. This shows a strain of compassion that goes beyond mere showmanship for the sake of the crown. He is also always willing to jump into the fray to protect any of his good friends, even in spite of the fact that it's their duty to protect him instead.

His closest relationships are undeniably those he has with his three compatriots throughout the game (Ignis, Gladio, and Prompto), his father, and his childhood best friend Lunafreya. His father Regis raised him as a single parent after the death of his wife, with his necessary duties as sovereign greatly impacting their relationship. While Regis was kind, albeit strict, and very protective over his son, his busy schedule combined with his desire for his son to have as normal a childhood as possible led to them spending large amounts of time apart. He sent Noctis to a traditional school instead of relegating his education to tutors only and both showed an understanding for the difficulty of the other’s situation. Unfortunately, Regis’s untimely passing near the start of the game strips away the last bit of normalcy he’d been trying to safeguard for his son and Noctis still struggles to cope with his father’s death.

Ignis and Gladio have both been with Noctis from a very young age, with Ignis serving as his attendant and adviser while Gladio is his primary bodyguard, just as Gladio’s father was guard to Regis. Both expressed doubts in their prince’s ability to lead early on, with Gladio thinking Noctis was spoiled and selfish while Ignis was concerned over his lack of interest in political affairs. Both come to realize that Noctis’s aloof, detached personality is a sham and that not only is he determined, but he’s willing to make sacrifices for his people. They are both extremely attached to him and view him as a brother, pushing him to be the best he can while also remaining two of the only people he’s willing to show his true self around.

Prompto is another such person, being Noctis’s best friend throughout high school. Though they met earlier when they were both younger, Prompto denies this due to feeling ashamed of his appearance when they were children. Noctis references his memories of him at that age once or twice, however, and makes it clear that his looks hadn’t mattered at all to him. Prompto is one of the only people he can be truly normal with, often spending time with him after class when they were younger so he could put aside his royal duties. He accepts Noctis’s life for what it is, however, and even joins the royal guard in order to stay close to him once they’ve graduated. He’s great at cutting through Noctis’s shyness and helps him showcase his passions for his personal interests, never letting him get too lost in his royalty.

Finally, Lunafreya is Noctis’s oldest friend and fiancée. They met when they were children after Regis brought Noctis to her kingdom to recuperate following a Niflheim attack in which he was gravely injured. A young princess, Luna was well-versed in old lore that greatly interested Noctis and the two quickly became attached to one another while in one another’s company. When they were separated following Niflheim’s occupation of her land, they upheld written communication throughout the years and only grew closer despite physical distance. His excitement at getting to see her again after their engagement is arranged for them is obvious, whether he’s prepared for marriage at such a young age or not.
CRAU: N/A

SPECIES: Human
APPEARANCE: Really glad I don’t have to describe that outfit using words.
SKILLS: - weapons proficiency with staves/spears, swords, guns, broadswords, daggers, axes, bows, shuriken, offensive shields, maces, and tridents
- he’s extremely good at video games (it’s a talent)
- he can sleep anywhere
- he’s a fantastic fisherman
- some knowledge of diplomacy, battle strategy, economics, and politics (or whatever he managed to retain from his lessons)

NEW POWER: Sleep Inducement. A simple first form of this power would be the ability to instill a sense of drowsiness in others via touch.
POWER REASONING: First, sleeping is just about his favorite thing to do. Second, Noctis has a strong desire for the world to slow down and allow him to be normal, on top of a discomfort with social situations in which he’s out of his element. Sleep is the perfect way to shut everyone up and reduce people to a base commonality.
