♰ BASICS
Character's name: Noctis Lucis Caelum
Canon: Final Fantasy XV
Canon point: Just prior to leaving for Altissia, after acquiring Ramuh.
Age: 20
Background: History
Abilities:
Weapons proficiency: with staves/spears, swords, guns, broadswords, daggers, axes, bows, shuriken, offensive shields, maces, and tridents
Warping: can warp short distances (as far as he can throw, really) to his weapons; he utilizes this by throwing his weapons and teleporting after them to travel more easily
Weapons summoning: can summon his weapons and otherwise stores them (along with other items he deems useful (they rarely are)) in his own personal hammer space
Team support: also can support both summoning of weapons and short range teleportation for others — he gives his party members the skill to call their weapons in the main game and also bestows the ability on the player character (with warping as well, this time) in the Comrades expansion
Healing item creation: can make potions out of ordinary soft drinks
Dodging: in the same vein as his teleporting, Noctis can dodge almost any physical attack while leaving behind an after-image
Elemancy: Noctis can draw one of three elements from any applicable source where they exist (fire, ice, and electricity) and store them within himself to combine them into magical spells later; these can also be utilized by his party members. They do not require mp to use, then, but he can only store one spell per flask. These range in power depending on how much elemental energy he puts into them, from a very weak attack to a strong one with a wider range (a few meters in diameter) and multiple hits.
Armiger: can call the thirteen legendary Royal Arms (assorted weapons used by those in his bloodline) and use them in tandem for a brief period of time for a vicious physical assault (less than a minute unless imbued with an extra significant source of power)
Astrals: Noctis also has two astrals at his beck and call (Titan and Ramuh) by his canon point, essentially gods with major destructive power capable of leveling cities and destroying all but the strongest of enemies in one hit
Note: a brief addendum that I fully anticipate and welcome any and all nerfing as some of these are a bit ridiculous, but am also happy to self-nerf within the parameters of the game!
♰ SUITABILITY
Strengths:
Resilient: Noctis acquired his first set of burdens at birth and has only since added to the pile. Not only is he royalty, saddled with a bloodline that guarantees an early death thanks to the strain of protective magic he’s expected to use to shield his people, he’s a royal at war. Within the first few hours of the game he is made an orphan by the death of his father, and subsequently inherits the throne of a kingdom under siege by foreign powers. In spite of all this (and an extremely abbreviated period of grieving) he presses on, immediately setting his sights of what he needs to accomplish and fighting to help others. This has already also been the case in Nightfell – he’s immediately sought out transportation and lodging, helping others through the tempest and to acquire food and shelter in the process.
Kind-hearted: As mentioned above, Noctis fights for others. He trains to accept his duties, yes, but even when unrecognized as royalty he takes his time caring for the most vulnerable around himself. He is patient and understanding with children, appreciative of and attentive to animals, and willing to go well out of his way to tend to the injured – even when such injuries are minor. In Nightfell he has already harvested the venom sacs from the badaliscus in hopes of aiding in the development of some kind of anti-venom.
Weaknesses:
Stupidity: Unlikely to be a controversial take to anyone who has played the game, but Noctis is not especially bright. He’s slack-jawed, speaks roughly and with a general lack of personal dignity, and mumbles his way through half of his scenes. He’s incompetent when it comes to day to day tasks thanks to his royal privilege, and not especially quick to learn any of them. In Nightfell he has already had to seek out help just to work an oven, and even then has no common sense in what temperatures to use.
Social awkwardness: Beyond the simple fact that he’s shy (too shy on the TDM, in fact, to want to use a public hot spring) Noctis also struggles to communicate effectively with others. When he’s in royal mode, needing to command respect or soothe some citizen in need? He can perform. But in navigating the intricacies of the working class and seamlessly blending in with his surroundings, he fails utterly. He’s addicted to his filler “ah”s and stutters, fighting to seem disaffected and relaxed when in reality it comes across as apathetic and uncomfortable.
Fears:
Being alone: With a mother who died when he was an infant and a father tasked with ruling a kingdom, Noctis spent his childhood very isolated. While it’s extremely clear that he also fears the responsibility of rule, the game’s core message is that that’s possible for him as long as he has support. Without his friends, as he’ll be in Nightfell, he may very well begin to spiral.
Death: While a fear experienced by most mortals, Noctis has had his inevitable end looming over him from a very young age. Even in peace times his ancestors have all experienced rapid aging and early death due to the burden of their magic, and there is little Noctis wants more than a chance to escape that fate.
Desires:
Normalcy: Noctis’s deepest darkest wish is to just be normal. He wants a present, undistracted father, an average school experience, to be unrecognized out in public, and to live his life without guards hanging on his every move. He doesn’t want to rule, he wants to live. This will be the number one insecurity and obsessive desire that his Shadow will target.
Companionship: Chief in importance in Noctis’s life are the few solid relationships he has, particularly with his retinue (consisting of his personal attendant, bodyguard, and childhood friend). He did not instigate any of these relationships himself, however, and frequently has trouble with the obvious barriers between himself and those who are technically in service of him. He has a great wish to view these people as his true friends and equals, and will likely seek out the opportunity to take the first step in establishing a bond (or finding a soulmate) in Nightfell for the first time.
Regrets:
His relationship with his father: At his canonpoint Noctis is still grappling with the very recent (within the past few weeks) loss of his father, and as such is devoting a great amount of his time to analyzing their final interactions. He was curt with Regis when leaving the Crown City for the final time, rushing to begin his trip to meet with his bride-to-be, as he had zero knowledge of the fact that their kingdom’s greatest enemy was soon to launch an attack that would result in his father’s death. We see him snap and show his anger and great sorrow over this in the game, but it’s equally clear that he isn’t given much time or space by his duties to truly mourn. This absolutely still eats at him and is another powerful insecurity for his Shadow to target.
Tethers:
His scrapbook: No larger than a sketchbook, this is the main tool that Noctis uses to communicate with his fiancee, Luna. Since he was a child he’s written messages to her within it, with her then responding in kind and sending it back to him.
His Carbuncle figurine: This small charm represents Noctis’s bond with his father, as Regis gave it to him to offer him protection when he needed it most.
A photograph of his retinue in front of the Regalia: A picture taken by Prompto, his best friend and photographer extraordinaire. This picture represents the beginning of their journey together, their close bond with one another, and his love for his friends back home.
Ring of the Lucii: The ring worn by every king of Lucis. It greatly increases the magical power of the wearer while draining them of life in return, and represents Noctis’s inescapable destiny and duties to his world.
